ORIEL BOYS HIGH SCHOOL VIA ALUMNI CONTINUE MAKING WAVES WITH THEIR VENTURE LAVISH BIOGAS!
During the 2020 NBCC, the team from Oriel Boys High School pitched their business venture Lavish Biogas. They sought to build biodigesters in response to the power crisis in Zimbabwe, as well as the general lack of access to clean cooking fuels affecting about 970 million people in Africa.
As a result of their hard work they progressed to the Virtual Innovation Accelerator (VIA) programme, which equipped them with more practical business knowledge and skills. Fast forward to today, their project won second prize during the Harare Province Tourism Innovation Challenge, securing them a place at the 6-months incubation programme with Kukura Business Accelerator!
The Tourism Innovation Challenge is a competition by the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority which targets innovators and start-ups developing sustainable, disruptive and innovative projects for Zimbabwe’s Tourism Sector.
As the team continues to develop and improve their innovation, which they hope will answer a lot of problems in the energy sector, they have also started installations. They hope to commercialise their Biodigester by November 2022.
One of the team members, Nigel Hove, had this to say, “We just used the skills and techniques we got from the VIA Masterclasses to come up with a pitch deck of how our solution addresses problems in the tourism industry. So thank you, l know and believe that we can make it to the top.”
